CD-adapco and FFT (Free Field Technologies), provider of services in the field of acoustic design, have coupled their software to provide engineers with the requisite 'tools of the trade' for resolving aeroacoustic headaches. Acoustic simulations using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) coupled with noise propagation, CA (computational acoustics) are now being used routinely in industry, thanks to the coupling of STAR-CD and Actran. In the past year, this coupling has been proven for industrial cases in the aerospace and automotive industries. It provides a level of understanding of the underlying phenomena never before realized, generating solutions and helping to optimize physical testing. Until recently, the digital design environment has not included coupled CFD and CA problems, where time-varying fluid dynamics excite acoustics. With the coupling of STAR-CD and Actran, these phenomena can, and have been, accurately modeled on industrial geometries. Results from time-varying STAR-CD calculations have been used to excite acoustic resonance - not observable in CFD alone - modeled in Actran. This enabled the client to understand and resolve the problem (publication en route). A typical example of this process in action is the buffeting noise, which can be generated by side-view mirrors and propagates to passengers. Only by modeling the coupled CFD and CA problem can aerodynamic design changes be understood in terms of their acoustic effect on the driver. Aeroacoustic noise from HVAC systems is another potential irritant - but one that can be mitigated by computing noise sources from fans, propagated through HVAC ducting that simultaneously provides efficient airflow while damping out noise. Steve MacDonald, President of CD-adapco explains, "Many applications, across all industry sectors will benefit from this type of coupled CFD/Acoustics simulation. Our link with a technology leader in acoustics, FTT, is consistent with our philosophy of providing complete engineering solutions with best-in-class partners". Jean-Louis Migeot, CEO of FFT, adds, "Today, the challenge for people who want to use CFD results for aeroacoustics is twofold: they must have a tool well suited to their application, and this tool must be applied with an understanding of the physical phenomena involved. In that sense the partnership with CD-adapco has been essential." |
