The
latest release of the world's leading engine simulation CFD code,
STAR-CD v3.24, is packed full of new features aimed directly at
the engine modeling community. |

ECFM models STAR-CD's new Extended Coherent Flame Model combustion models (ECFM and ECFM-3Z) overcome the restrictions of traditional single mixture combustion models. The ECFM models are equally valid whether the charge is "pre-mixed", "partiallymixed" or "non-mixed" or any combination of these. Jointly developed by Renault and IFP (Institut Francais du Petrole), the ECFM models are intended to address the specific combustion challenges posed by Direct Injection (DI) engines. Unlike traditional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines, DI engines are characterized by a high degree of charge stratification. Standard models (such as the original CFM model), which require a homogeneous charge, are therefore not easily applied to DI engines. The ECFM models are not subject to this restriction and are valid in all mixture regimes, from very lean through to very rich. The models are equally applicable to GDI engines (using a spark ignition model) and to HCCI and DI Diesel engines (using an auto-ignition model). |

The long-standing relationship between CD-adapco and Gamma Technologies Inc. continues with the release of an upgraded interface between STAR-CD v3.24 and GT-SUITE (GT-POWER, GT-COOL, GT-FUEL). Timed to coincide with the release of GTSUITE V6.1, the new interface takes full advantage of the new features in both codes. STAR and GT-SUITE can be distributed across a network, communicating via the GT-LINK server. The link is fully compatible with HPC analyses and there are no constraints on domain decomposition Interface with WAVE A new interface between STAR-CD and Ricardo's WAVE code is also supported. By coupling WAVE and STAR-CD, engineers can optimize the focus of their system simulations, applying STARCD to the components where detailed three-dimensional analysis is required, and WAVE to the remainder. The interface is available free of charge as a plug-in library, which can be optionally installed with the default STAR-CD v3.24 installation. |
